For me painting is meditation, contemplating the "wallpaper". "Wallpaper" being the background in which we play out the activities and dramas of daily life.
Celebrating the mundane, the extraordinary, the rare, iconic or imagined objects. The images explore how I perceive both my childhood self and my childhood imaginings, from my perspective now as a mother.
I am Karla Stevenson. I grew up in Tauranga and studied at Waikato Polytechnic, completing a Bachelor of Media Arts in 2000. I majored in sculpture and though I have mostly focused on painting, the influence of sculpture is reflected in my paintings, which explore depth versus flatness.
I have lived in Raglan for 5 years and am inspired by the energy of the ocean, landscape and community.
